International technology group ANDRITZ has successfully completed the supply and commissioning of a continuous pickling line, acid regeneration plant, acid purification plant, and silicon removal systems, which have been integrated into voestalpine’s cold rolling mill #3 in Linz. The final acceptance tests were carried out at the end of March, marking the completion of the project.
Designed to produce high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel strip for the automotive, household appliance, construction, and e-mobility industries, the continuous pickling line has an annual capacity of approximately 1.8 million tons. It supports environmentally friendly production processes by using recycled hydrochloric acid.
The acid regeneration plant enables nearly 100% acid recovery, significantly contributing to sustainable production and meeting the highest environmental standards. As a by-product of the regeneration process, high-purity iron oxide is produced—an important raw material for e-mobility applications.
The silicon removal systems are aimed at ensuring continuous operation and enhancing the quality of the pickled steel strip.
Walter Schickmaier, Business Unit Manager at voestalpine, commented: “The new installation enables us to increase the production quality of high strength and ultra-high strength steel strip.”
