American Iron and Steel Institute supports tariff change

American Iron and Steel Institute supports tariff change

Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), issued a statement on US President Donald Trump's decision to increase existing steel tariffs from 25% to 50%. In the statement, Dempsey thanked President Trump with the following statements:

"AISI welcomes President Trump's announcement today that he will raise steel tariffs to 50%. Global steel overcapacity and production, led by China, continues to grow despite a sharp downturn in China's construction sector. As a result, China's steel exports to the world have more than doubled since 2020, reaching 118 million metric tons in 2024. This is more than total North American steel production."

Noting that these conditions are not improving, Dempsey added that the tariff increase is an important step to protect American producers:

"Under these challenging international conditions, the President's decision to raise tariffs will protect domestic producers and workers by preventing new waves of steel imports into the United States. AISI applauds this bold step to keep the American steel industry strong."
