The Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI) has announced the allocation of land to Chinese steel giant Jingdong Steel for a major steel project. Under the agreement signed on Monday, a 36-hectare plot in the Dhraâ El-Hadja industrial zone has been designated for the construction of a state-of-the-art steel production facility with an annual capacity of 500,000 tons.
According to AAPI, the USD 500 million investment marks a significant milestone in Algeria’s industrial development and is viewed as a critical step in establishing North Africa as a major steel and pipe manufacturing center.
The project is set to be implemented in two phases: the first phase will see the establishment of a steel plate production line with a capacity of 200,000 tons per year, while the second phase will introduce a high-tech steel pipe production unit with a capacity of 300,000 tons per year, catering to the construction, energy, and water infrastructure sectors.
The raw materials for the USD 500 million project will be sourced 80% locally, with 50% of the plant’s production aimed at the domestic market and the remaining 50% for export. A training center will also be established to support skill development and technology transfer in steel-related professions.
