Advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei criticizes the state's weight in the economy

Ali Larijani, advisor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and former Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, said that 85% of the country's economy is controlled by the state and that this structure hinders the solution of economic problems.

Advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei criticizes the state's weight in the economy

Speaking at a conference in Tehran, Larijani emphasized the need to remove obstacles to investment and said, “This method is neither religious nor rational. Even if the sanctions are lifted, economic transformation will not take place without changing this structure.”

Stating that the economy is in recession, Larijani said, “To solve economic problems, we must pave the way for people to invest. Obstructive laws need to be abolished and rulers need to take bold steps.”

State's Influence on the Economy is a Topic of Discussion

From strategic sectors such as oil and gas to banking and industry, Iran's economy is controlled directly or indirectly by the state. A large part of the economy is run by state-controlled large companies, religious foundations and semi-official organizations such as the Revolutionary Guards Corps.

Experts argue that reforms without reducing the weight of the state in the economy will not bring lasting solutions to structural problems such as high inflation and unemployment.
