Acciaierie d'Italia reactivates its blast furnace number 2

Acciaierie d'Italia (ADI), Europe's largest steel plant in Taranto, a joint venture between steel company ArcelorMittal and the state-owned Acciaierie d'Italia (ADI), has restarted its No. 2 furnace (BF).

Acciaierie d'Italia reactivates its blast furnace number 2

Furnace No. 2 was idle for ten months from July 2022 until it was restarted, while the steel plant worked on two blast furnaces. The productivity of furnaces 1 and 4 is known to be 1.3 million tonnes per year. The restart of the units is expected to increase the company's production volumes. At the moment, some temporarily laid-off staff are continuing their work.

The restart of blast furnace No. 2 at the plant is expected to shorten order fulfilment times and solve ArcelorMittal's slab supply problems.

ADI plans to produce 4 million tonnes of steel in 2023. In 2024, the Italian steel plant aims to produce 5 million tonnes of steel. To this end, ADI plans to start in 2023 the reconstruction of blast furnace (BF) №5, which has been idle for many years. Furnace No. 4 has already been rebuilt and furnace No. 2 is in normal condition.
