A new ship recycling project launched in Pakistan

The Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships and Decent Work (SENSREC-DW) Project which aims to improve safety, environmental responsibility, and workers’ rights in the ship recycling sector, has been launched in Pakistan. The first workshop of the project was held in Karachi on September 16, 2024. The event was attended by approximately 150 people from government officials, industry representatives, and labor organizations.

According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the main focus of the workshop was to ensure compliance with the Hong Kong Convention, Basel Convention, and International Labor Organization (ILO) standards and to improve working conditions against the high risks of ship dismantling activities in developing countries. The project emphasized training and capacity-building programs adapted to local needs.

The participants conducted a technical visit to ship recycling yards in Gadani, Balochistan, to observe the challenges in the field. The results of the project are expected to contribute to the development of decent work and sustainable practices in ship recycling facilities in Pakistan.

This project is being implemented in collaboration with IMO and ILO and is a continuation of the SENSREC project launched in Bangladesh in 2015.

The Hong Kong Convention, adopted in 2009, aims to recycle ships without harming the environment and human health and will enter into force on 26 June 2025.
