Iran's iron and steel export data for the April-December 2023 and 2024 periods reveal a mixed picture of growth and decline in the sector. While the total volume of iron and steel exports stood at 21,702 thousand tonnes in 2023, it declined by 2.17% to 21,232 thousand tonnes in the same period in 2024. However, the value of exports fell by a larger 14 per cent, from $5,563 million to $4,771 million.

One of the segments showing an increase in export volume was long products. Exports of long products increased by 16% from 2,155 thousand tonnes in 2023 to 2,504 thousand tonnes in 2024. The export value of these products also increased by 10 per cent to $1,203 million. Rebar exports increased by 15 per cent in volume and 10 per cent in value. CRC exports increased by 41 per cent in volume and 17 per cent in value.

In contrast, flat steel products had a mixed performance. HRC exports fell by 12 per cent, while CRC exports recorded a significant increase. Overall, the export volume and export value of flat steel products decreased by 8 per cent and 9 per cent, respectively.

A significant decline was observed in semi-finished products. Billet and Bloom, Slab, Sponge Iron, Pellet and Iron Ore Concentrate exports decreased by 22 per cent in volume and 26 per cent in value. There was a significant decrease in slab exports, with a 36 per cent decrease in volume and a 39 per cent decrease in value.
