Greenhouse gases hit record levels in 2020

Due to global warming, Earth's average temperatures continue to rise and glaciers are gradually disappearing. One of the biggest reasons for this is the unavoidable increase in the rate of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced that the heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reached a record level in 2020, with an annual increase rate above the 2011-2020 average.

The WMO stated that the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2), the most important greenhouse gas, reached a record 413.2 parts per million in 2020, which is 149 percent higher than the pre-industrial level.

Of the other greenhouse gases, methane reached 262 percent and nitrous oxide 123 percent, higher than in 1750.

TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE TO RISE

The WMO stated that as long as emissions continue, global temperature will continue to rise.

Given the long lifespan of CO2, the currently observed temperature level will continue for several decades, even as emissions fall rapidly to net zero.

According to scientists at Northern Arizona University, if temperatures continue to rise in this way, by 2050 the effects of man-made carbon will peak and become deadly.
