Global crude steel production increased by 1.5% in May

Global crude steel production in April 2024 increased by 1.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 165.1 million tons (Mt).

World Steel Association (WorldSteel) announced the crude steel production figures for May 2024. According to the data released, crude steel production of 71 countries in May 2024 increased by 1.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 165.1 million tons (Mt).

Crude steel production by region

In May, Africa's crude steel production increased by 0.9% compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 1.8 million tons.

Asia and Oceania, on the other hand, produced 122.1 million tons with an increase of 1.6% during the same period. The EU (27) realized a production of 11.7 million tons with a 1.8% increase while Europe, Others produced 3.9 million tons with a 6.2% increase. The Middle East produced 5.2 million tons with a 4.6% increase, North America produced 9.4 million tons of crude steel with a 0.9% decrease. Russia and other CIS countries + Ukraine produced 7.7 million tons with a 2.8% increase, South America produced 3.3 million tons with an 8.2% decrease.

Top 10 steel-producing countries

China maintained its lead by producing 92.9 million tons in May, marking a 2.7% increase compared to the previous year. India, on the other hand, produced 12.2 million tons with a 3.5% increase. Japan's production was at 7.2 million tons, reflecting a decrease of 6.3%. The U.S. produced 6.9 million tons, showing a decrease of 1.5%, while Russia's estimated production was 6.3 million tons with a 0.9% decrease. South Korea produced 5.2 million tons, experiencing a 10.9% decrease, Germany produced 3.2 million tons with a 1.9% decrease, Turkey produced 3.2 million tons with an 11.6% increase, Iran produced 3.3 million tons with a 2.1% increase, and Brazil produced 2.6 million tons with a 7.4% decrease.
