Glencore plans to add lithium to its metal range

Mining and commodities giant Glencore is considering adding lithium to its range of metals it trades, as it becomes a driving force in the electric vehicle market and concerns about a lack of supply.

Glencore plans to add lithium to its metal range

Glencore, which does not own lithium mines, switched to metal recycling this year. The company, which wants to establish a new lithium-ion battery recycling plant in the UK, has joined forces with battery company Britishvolt.

At the end of January, Glencore took another step into the metals recycling business by partnering with the Moroccan mining company Managem. They have announced that they will produce cobalt from recycled battery materials at a factory near Marrakech.

The increase in the amount of metal used in the last ten years has caused lithium prices to reach record levels this year, although the increasing demand has not yet been met by the lack of investment.
