German Steel Association publishes research on the transformation of the steel industry

The research emphasizes the critical role of the steel industry in Germany's economic sustainability and the process of sustainable transformation. The results clearly indicate a noticeable increase in uncertainty among steel industry customers about a successful transformation scenario. According to the surveys, a failed transformation would have serious impacts on investments and employment in the steel processing sector.

The steel industry in Germany is an essential element of successful industrial construction. Steel from Germany provides strategic independence and is a key factor for overall economic stability.

The steel industry, through its steel-intensive value chains of upstream suppliers and steel-intensive customers, accounts for 23% of production value (EUR 1,717 billion), 17% of value added (EUR 591 billion), and 12% of total employment in the German economy (5.5 million).

The steel industry is an important competitive factor, especially in the SME sector. According to a company survey, this is reportedly based on key advantages of German steel compared to foreign steel, such as lower CO2 emissions, the stability of supply chains, and the ability to advance research and development activities in a targeted approach.

According to the survey, 72% of the companies expected a reduction in their carbon footprint as an outcome of the changes in the steel industry. The opportunity for the transformation of steel to become more environmentally friendly is highlighted, making it easier to achieve climate goals and further strengthening the customer's network with the supplier.
