Brodtmann emphasized that while they support the goal of reducing dependence on China, attention must be paid to the potential impact of measures on Europe’s industrial value chains.
In his statement, Brodtmann said:
“We support the objective of minimizing dependence on China in the steel sector. Recent developments in rare earth elements clearly show where such dependencies can lead. However, when implementing measures, it is essential to consider how they will affect costs within Europe’s value-added networks. Negative consequences for the international competitiveness of the mechanical engineering sector and other steel consumers, which could arise from significantly higher supply prices, must be avoided.”
The VDMA executive also stressed that the EU should adopt a comprehensive approach covering the entire value chain in its steel policies:
“Therefore, the EU should embrace a holistic approach that encompasses the entire sector and value chain. Strengthening Europe as a business hub, reducing bureaucracy, and lowering energy costs should take precedence over protective measures. This will benefit all sectors competing with China.”
