Fortescue produced its first hot metal for green metal production in Australia

Fortescue has produced its first hot metal at the Green Metal Project in Australia’s Christmas Creek region. The company announced that this production marks the first successful operation of the electric smelting process and represents a significant milestone in the project aimed at green metal production in Australia.

The pilot project was established to test new technology for green metal production using iron ore extracted from the Pilbara region and to refine the production process.

Commissioning work on the project will continue

Commissioning work on the project will proceed in phases. During this process, teams plan to safely test, refine, and optimize the process before moving to larger-scale production.

Fortescue Metals CEO Dino Otranto noted that the first hot metal production marks a significant milestone for the Green Metal Project. Otranto stated that the company aims to achieve commercial-scale green metal production in Australia.

The first hot metal was produced using a blended feedstock

The company explained that the first hot metal production involved obtaining molten metal in an electric arc furnace. As part of the commissioning process, it was announced that while the facility is being brought online in phases, the initial production was carried out using a blended feedstock.

Fortescue noted that Australia has long exported iron ore and that the next opportunity lies in producing higher-value-added green metal from this ore within the country.

The company also reported that commercial-scale green metal production using Pilbara ore has not yet been resolved and that the Green Metal Project is continuing its work in this area.
