The incident occurred on Monday around 00:50 at the steel plant in the city of Muroran. According to a nearby resident who reported the fire to the local fire department, no injuries were confirmed.
The company and fire authorities stated that the fire was caused by an explosion in the plant’s hot air stove. The hot air stove supports the blast furnace by blowing high-temperature air into it. The fire was brought under control around 08:00 in the morning.
Nippon Steel confirmed that the explosion and fire did not cause any damage to the furnace. However, as a safety measure, operations at the plant’s blast furnace were temporarily suspended.
The company also emphasized that it is continuing to assess potential damages to other facilities and logistics operations.
