Fire panic aboard scrap-loaded ship

A fire broke out on the scrap-loaded vessel Federal Tweed in Amsterdam.

Fire panic aboard scrap-loaded ship

The Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier caught fire while docked at Amerikahaven Way in the Western Port Area of Amsterdam. The incident occurred yesterday morning, local time.

It was reported that the fire started in one of the cargo holds containing scrap metal and caused heavy smoke across the port area and surrounding neighborhoods. Due to the widespread smoke, the Amsterdam Fire Department issued a public advisory urging residents in the area to keep their windows and doors closed.

Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene and began unloading the burning scrap metal from the ship’s hold using cranes in an effort to bring the fire under control. The removed scrap continued to be extinguished on the dock. Firefighting teams are expected to remain on site for an extended period to mitigate the effects of the smoke and monitor its levels.

Built in 2013, the Federal Tweed is approximately 190 meters long and 32.27 meters wide, with a cargo capacity of 55,317 tons. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and no official statement has been made regarding the incident.

Market sources have stated that an emergency action plan will be implemented due to this situation, and that there may be a break of at least 3 months in the company due to procedures such as reporting, prosecution investigation, and trial following the damage assessment.
