Sweden-based stainless steel producer Fagersta Stainless has agreed with Danieli to build a new stainless steel bloom mill with an annual production capacity of 70,000 tons at its plant in Fagersta. The new mill is planned to be commissioned by the end of 2026.
The new mill will produce round bars and billets with a diameter of 35 to 220 mm. The project aims to increase the product range and operational flexibility of the Fagersta plant, making it more competitive. The mill will allow for three different production routes. Billets and blooms will be sent directly to the existing wire rod line without any storage or reheating steps. In addition, the products can be processed through a new reversible walking block stand or a continuous rolling line.
In the project, the breakdown mill stand, which has been in operation since 1943, will be modernized and made suitable for automatic mode and the necessary certifications will be provided. In addition, six new Danieli Centro Combustion low-consumption pit furnaces with hydrogen-assisted regenerative burners will be installed at the plant. These furnaces will offer environmentally friendly production with low NOx emissions. Raw material handling processes will be carried out by automatic cranes with intelligent video monitoring provided by Danieli Centro Cranes.
Danieli Automation's advanced process control systems will be used to operate the plant. High alloy stainless steel grades such as Inconel and SuperDuplex will also be integrated into the production line.
This investment is the second major project between Fagersta Stainless and Danieli and aims to make the Fagersta plant one of the centers of modern stainless steel production.
