A meeting held at the European Parliament, attended by around 100 members of parliament, steel industry executives and sector stakeholders, addressed the conditions needed to decarbonise the European steel industry while keeping production, investment and employment in Europe.
EUROFER highlighted that European steel producers are under pressure from high energy costs and global competition. In this context, the association said the Steel and Metals Action Plan should establish the conditions needed for the sector to remain competitive and continue investing in Europe.
Call for predictable demand for low-carbon steel
EUROFER stressed the importance of predictable demand to enable investments in low-carbon steel projects to move forward.
The association said the Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA), along with measures to promote the use of low-carbon steel in the automotive sector, could help create lead markets for steel produced in Europe.
ETS and CBAM decisions closely monitored
The statement also highlighted the importance of upcoming decisions under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
EUROFER stressed that these regulations should be implemented in a way that prevents carbon leakage and protects the competitiveness of steel production in Europe.
The association said Europe’s green transition should strengthen its industrial base and support growth, stressing that the transition must not weaken European industry.
