EU slashes Russian metallurgical imports in first half of 2024

In the first half of 2024, the European Union has significantly reduced its imports of metallurgical raw materials from Russia compared to the same period in 2023. The data shows a notable decline across three key categories; semi-finished products, direct reduced iron (DRI), and pig iron.

Imports of semi-finished products saw a sharp decrease, dropping from 2,000 units in 2023 to 1,500 units in 2024. Similarly, DRI imports fell from 800 units to 600 units, and pig iron imports decreased from 600 units to 400 units. This trend reflects a broader shift in the EU’s trade dynamics, potentially influenced by geopolitical tensions, economic sanctions, or efforts to diversify supply sources.

The reduction in imports could have significant implications for the EU’s metallurgical industry, potentially leading to increased costs or the need to seek alternative suppliers. It also highlights the ongoing impact of international relations on trade and industry.
