EU plans protective tariffs on Chinese steel

Rising protectionist policies in the U.S. and a wave of cheap steel imports from China are pushing the European Union to adopt protective measures.

EU plans protective tariffs on Chinese steel

The European Commission is reportedly planning to impose broad tariffs of 25% to 50% on steel and steel products in the coming weeks, according to German business daily Handelsblatt, citing senior officials in Brussels.

In addition, the EU is considering tying public procurement to a “Buy European” policy. Future infrastructure projects, including metros, bridges, and transport routes, would be constructed using green steel sourced from Europe. Large companies and vehicle leasing firms are also expected to be encouraged to purchase European-made electric vehicles for their fleets.

Stéphane Séjourné, EU Commissioner for Industry, told Handelsblatt that Europe has “no choice but to find a new balance.” He emphasized that this means “fewer trade barriers within the Union and protective measures to rebalance relations with partners who no longer respect any rules.”

The EU is receiving cautious support from the German government. Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil stated in Berlin, “Buying European may be one-sided,” and he is discussing the issue with his French counterpart, Éric Lombard.

Experts warn that these measures will affect not only the steel sector but also Europe’s broader supply chains and infrastructure projects.
