EU launches strategic dialogue for the steel industry

The European Commission has announced the establishment of a “Steel Strategic Dialogue” to shape the future of the steel industry. The initiative, announced by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, aims to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the European steel industry.

EU launches strategic dialogue for the steel industry

The Commission is preparing to take concrete steps to address the challenges facing the industry, such as rising energy costs, difficulties in accessing raw materials, global competition and new tariffs from the United States. In this context, Séjourné, Deputy Chief Executive of the European Commission, has been tasked with developing a specific Steel and Metals Action Plan in the spring.

President von der Leyen emphasized that the steel industry is critical for the European single market: “It also plays a key role in our fight against climate change. The Strategic Dialogue will help develop a concrete Action Plan to tackle the unique challenges facing the steel industry in the clean industrial transformation. Our aim is to ensure that the European steel industry is both competitive and sustainable in the long term.”

First Meeting of the Steel Strategic Dialogue to be held on March 4

On March 4, steel producers, raw material suppliers, buyers, social partners and civil society representatives have been invited to the high-level meeting. The meeting will address the challenges facing the European steel industry and discuss issues such as enhancing competitiveness, carbon neutral production, electrification and fair trade.

The dialogue will proceed in line with the EU Competitiveness Compass and the forthcoming EU Clean Industry Charter. The European Commission will keep the European Parliament and the Council informed at all stages of the process and will consult widely with other stakeholders in the sector.
