EU follows the US in lifting economic sanctions against Syria

The European Union (EU) has decided to lift all economic sanctions imposed on Syria since 2011 due to its civil war. This comes on the heels of US President Donald Trump's announcement last week that Washington had lifted sanctions on Syria.

EU follows the US in lifting economic sanctions against Syria

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas announced the decision on her social media account after the EU Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Brussels: “Today we have decided to lift our economic sanctions on Syria. We want to help the Syrian people build a new, inclusive and peaceful Syria.” Kallas emphasized that the EU will continue to stand by the Syrian people.

Statement of satisfaction from Damascus administration

Syrian Foreign Affairs Minister Assad Hassan Shaybani thanked the European Union's decision and stated: "We are grateful to the EU for its decision to lift the sanctions. This step will support security and stability in Syria."

Message of support from Türkiye

Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, in a statement on social media, described the decisions taken by the US and the EU as “extremely positive steps”. “If these sanctions, which have already started against the former tyrannical regime, were to continue, they would turn into punishing the innocent Syrian people and preventing Syria's reconstruction process,” Yılmaz stated.

Emphasizing the need for similar steps to be taken in Gaza, Yılmaz continued: "It is imperative that similar steps be taken in Gaza, which is subjected to inhumane attacks by the Netanyahu administration and where even the most basic humanitarian aid is prevented. Otherwise, no one will have the right to talk about basic human rights and international humanitarian law."
