EU crude steel production in October fell by 3.5%

Europe’s crude steel production fell by 3.5% y-o-y in October 2025.

EU crude steel production in October fell by 3.5%

According to the latest data released by the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), total crude steel production in the EU-27 reached 10.8 million tons in October 2025, marking a 3.5% decline compared to the same month last year.

In the January–October period, the EU’s crude steel output fell by 3.4% to 105.7 million tons.

Germany, the world’s eighth-largest crude steel producer, saw its output drop by 3% y-o-y to 3.1 million tons in October. Over the January–October period, German production decreased by 9.9% to 28.5 million tons.

Data from the German Steel Federation (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl) shows that the blast furnace–basic oxygen furnace (BOF) route remained the most pressured segment. BOF production fell by 4.5% y-o-y in October to 2.173 million tons, and dropped 12.4% in the first ten months to 19.533 million tons. Electric arc furnace (EAF) output was more stable: it rose slightly by 0.6% y-o-y in October to 953,000 tons, though January–October production still declined 4.1% to 8.972 million tons.

Pig iron output stood at 1.954 million tons in October, down 3.7% y-o-y; January–October volumes fell 11.6% to 18.025 million tons. Hot-rolled product output saw a sharper decline: October production fell 10.7% to 2.466 million tons, while the ten-month total dropped 7.1% to 25.007 million tons. Overall, the data shows that pressure intensified throughout the year across both BOF and EAF routes in Germany, with production trending consistently weak.

Italy remains in positive territory

In contrast to Germany, Italy’s steel sector performed more strongly in October. According to data from the Italian Steel Producers Association (Federacciai), national crude steel production reached 2 million tons in October, up 2.2% y-o-y. Total output for January–October increased to 17.5 million tons, marking 3.1% annual growth.

Long products continued to drive sector expansion. October long steel production rose 11.6% to 1.2 million tons, while the ten-month total grew 4.4% year-on-year to 10.4 million tons.

In flat products, the recovery seen in September weakened again in October. Monthly flat product output fell 2.6% y-o-y to 779,000 tons, while January–October volumes rose 4.7% to 7.6 million tons.
