EU Commission calls on China to seek negotiated solution to US tariffs

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had a critical phone call with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. In a written statement released by the European Commission, it was stated that the two leaders had a constructive conversation, discussing bilateral and global issues.

During the constructive conversation where bilateral and global issues were discussed, President von der Leyen emphasized the importance of stability and predictability for the global economy. Drawing attention to the uncertainty created by the high tariffs imposed by the US, the President stated that major economies such as Europe and China should lead a reformed trade system based on fair and equal terms.

President von der Leyen emphasized China's critical role in addressing potential trade diversion from tariffs, especially in sectors affected by global overcapacity. The leaders discussed setting up a mechanism to monitor possible trade deviations and ensure that developments are addressed as necessary.

She also noted that they were reminded of the urgency for structural solutions to rebalance bilateral trade relations and ensure better access of European businesses, products and services to the Chinese market.

EU-China cooperation on the international climate agenda and the transition to clean industry was also discussed during the conversation.

Finally, President von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU's firm support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, emphasizing that any conditions for peace must be set by Ukraine. She invited China to intensify its efforts to contribute meaningfully to the peace process.
