Egypt and France partner on USD 7.68 billion green hydrogen partnership

Egypt and France have signed a major project to build an integrated facility for the production of green hydrogen on the west coast of the Gulf of Suez, which will be implemented in three phases. The agreement, with a total investment of approximately USD 7.68 billion, aims to further strengthen the strategic cooperation between the two countries in the field of energy.

According to a statement released by the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry, a comprehensive cooperation agreement for a green hydrogen production facility was signed during the official visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the capital Cairo. The project is planned to be developed as an integrated facility in the Ras Shukayr region, which will produce green hydrogen as well as its derivatives such as ammonia.

The agreement was signed by the “Green Fuel Alliance” consisting of the Egyptian General Authority for Red Sea Ports and the New and Renewable Energy Authority, French energy company EDF Renewables and Zero Waste, an Egyptian/UAE joint venture. The project, which will be implemented in three phases, aims to reach an annual production capacity of 1 million tons. The entire investment will be financed by the project company.

The signing ceremony was attended by Egyptian Minister of Industry and Transport Kamil al-Wazir, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Ismat and French Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry Eric Lombard. The signatures were signed by Mohamed Abdurrahim, Chairman of the Red Sea Ports Authority, Ihab Ismail, Chairman of the New and Renewable Energy Authority, Amr al-Sawaf, Chairman of Zero Waste, and Beatrice Buffon, Director of EDF Renewables.
