Egypt aims to strengthen the Suez Canal as a logistics hub

Egypt aims to strengthen the Suez Canal’s role as a logistics hub in response to changing shipping routes in maritime trade, following disruptions in the Suez Canal since 2024.

Egypt aims to strengthen the Suez Canal as a logistics hub

Recent data indicate that canal traffic is proceeding at normal levels, while regional tensions continue to underscore the Suez Canal’s critical role as a key transit point for global trade.

According to some sources, on March 3, a total of 56 vessels transited the canal in both directions, with a combined gross tonnage of approximately 2.6 million tons. The northbound convoy included 24 vessels carrying about 1 million tons of cargo, while the southbound convoy consisted of 32 vessels carrying approximately 1.6 million tons.

Data from the Suez Canal Authority shows that between February 28 and March 2, the canal’s total net tonnage reached around 3.8 million tons, with approximately 100 vessels passing through. Officials reported that vessel transits are continuing smoothly and emphasized that operational stability is being maintained.

Due to security concerns leading to restrictions on maritime transport through the Strait of Hormuz, exporters are being redirected to alternative routes. These circumstances are enhancing the strategic importance of the Suez Canal for trade flows between Europe and Asia, while also providing Egypt with an opportunity to strengthen revenues from transit passages and build greater confidence in its logistics services.
