Digital product passport becomes mandatory in the UAE

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken an important step in the steel industry and introduced a new regulation for steel products used in the construction industry. Within the context of Cabinet Decision No. 121/2023, the Digital Product Passport (DPP) application has been made mandatory in order to ensure the safe and transparent introduction of steel products to the market.

With this regulation, the performance and environmental data of steel products will now be digitally recorded. Users will be able to easily access the product's production information, test results and environmental impacts via dynamic QR codes integrated into the products. This innovation will both increase transparency in the supply chain and contribute to sectoral efficiency by accelerating the transfer of information.

The regulation stands out as part of the ‘Make it in the Emirates’ and ‘Green Manufacturing’ initiatives in line with the UAE's digitalisation and sustainability goals. It also aims to increase consumer confidence in the safety of steel products used in the construction industry.

The deadline for manufacturers to comply with these new regulations is 27 November 2024. By this date, steel producers must complete the necessary preparations to harmonise their products with the digital product passport system. The new practice is seen as a harbinger of an important transformation not only in the steel industry but also in the construction industry in general.
