Italian specialty steelmaker Cogne Acciai Speciali has upgraded the cooling chamber of the continuous casting machine used to produce specialty steel billets at its Aosta plant, in collaboration with Danieli Service.

Cogne Acciai Speciali modernizes continuous casting machine at its Aosta plant

As part of the project, new equipment was installed to improve machine efficiency and facilitate maintenance activities.

New Stainless Steel Cooling Chamber Installed

As part of the project, a new stainless steel cooling chamber was designed and installed in the moving curved section of the continuous casting machine. The new chamber was designed to fully cover the wet area affected by secondary spray cooling.

The cooling chamber was pre-assembled at Danieli’s workshops and delivered to the plant partially assembled. This approach helped shorten the installation time and reduce the work required at the plant during maintenance activities.

New Central Support Structure Added to the Continuous Casting Machine

As part of the modernization, a new central support structure was installed to support all the fixed curved sections of the continuous casting machine.

New roller modules and covers were integrated into the structure to improve thermal insulation and facilitate operation and maintenance activities. In addition, new suction guides were added for the electromagnetic stirrers operating on different casting strands.

Mechanical Components Relocated Outside the Wet Area

As part of the modernization, all mechanical components were relocated outside the wet area. The new configuration is intended to facilitate maintenance activities, improve equipment durability and extend the service life of the components.

The support structure of the oscillating tables was also optimized to improve oscillation performance and overall casting stability.

Modernization Completed in Four Weeks

The entire modernization project at the Aosta plant was completed during a four-week summer shutdown. The new equipment was fully integrated with the existing systems, and the plant was brought back into operation shortly after the work was completed.
