China's crude steel production decreased by 6.9% y/y to 86.55 million tons in May, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics. In the same period, pig iron production decreased by 3.3% to 74.11 million tons. On the other hand, steel products production increased by 3.4% to 127.43 million tons.
In the January-May 2025 period, the country's total crude steel production decreased by 1.7% to 431.63 million tons. In the same period, pig iron output decreased by 0.1% to 362.74 million tons, while steel products output increased by 5.2% to 605.82 million tons.
Officials attributed the decline to the sluggish real estate sector, seasonal effects and government policies to tackle overcapacity.
