In the statement made by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Türkiye, it was reported that according to the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs data, the total amount of cargo handled at ports in the first two months of the year increased to 88,343,147 tons.
Minister Uraloğlu stated that a strong increase was experienced in container traffic. Emphasizing that 1,157,303 TEU containers were handled at ports in February, Uraloğlu expressed that this figure is the highest February level recorded after 2024 and pointed to a 13.9% increase compared to the same period last year. In the January-February period, the container handling amount increased by 3% on an annual basis and was realized as 2,238,224 TEU.
While the amount of cargo sent from ports to ports abroad in February was 10,542,469 tons, the amount of cargo arriving at Türkiye ports from abroad increased by 8.5% on an annual basis and reached 22,117,589 tons. Thus, total foreign trade cargo transportations in February increased to 32,660,058 tons with a 6% increase compared to the same month last year.
When evaluated on the basis of regional port authorities, the highest cargo handling in February occurred in port facilities operating within the administrative boundaries of the Aliağa Regional Port Authority with 7,349,150 tons. This region was followed by Kocaeli Regional Port Authority with 6,567,067 tons and İskenderun Regional Port Authority with 5,348,953 tons.
In the same period, transit cargo transportations carried out by sea were 5,561,761 tons, while the amount of cargo transported within the scope of cabotage transportation was recorded as 5,660,044 tons.
When cargo types were examined, the largest increase in February was observed in 40 foot full containers. While a total of 6,949,461 tons of handling was carried out at ports in this category, an increase of 441,407 tons occurred compared to the previous month.
In export cargoes, portland cement ranked first with 980,160 tons. This product was followed by aluminum ore and concentrates and feldspar. In imports, crude oil ranked first with 2,581,661 tons, while LNG and non-agglomerated hard coal were other prominent cargoes.
Italy was the country where the most cargo was sent in export transportations by sea in February, followed by the USA and Egypt. Russia took the first place in cargoes arriving at Türkiye ports by sea.
