Carbonless steel produced for the first time

Sweden-based companies achieved the world's first carbon-free steel production with a great cooperation. Steel company SSAB, energy company Vattenfall and mining and minerals group LKAB have partnered for the Hybrid project. In the hybrid project, the researchers used 100 percent fossil-free hydrogen instead of coal and coke to make steel.

Engineers from MIT and Shanghai Jiao Tong University have developed an inflatable bionic hand. Moreover, it is much more cost-effective than other products!

First customer of carbonless steel project Volvo
Steel company SSAB released a statement. The company announced that they have “produced and started delivering the world's first fossil-free steel.” The first customer of the hybrid project is a familiar name: Volvo. In the statement, they stated that they have started to deliver to Sweden-based Volvo.

In the statement, SSAB described the trial delivery as steps on the way to a “completely fossil-free iron and steel production” process. SSAB President and CEO Martin Lindqvist stated that the first carbon-free steel production is not just a breakthrough for SSAB.

Because it also represents a new transition. “It is proof that it is possible to significantly reduce the global carbon footprint of the steel industry,” the CEO said. said.

According to the International Energy Agency, the iron and steel industry is responsible for 2.6 gigatons of direct carbon dioxide emissions each year. In 2019, this number was greater than direct emissions from industries such as cement and chemicals.

Therefore, carbonless steel production is a major breakthrough. The agency also adds that the steel industry is “the largest consumer of industrial coal, providing about 75 percent of energy demand.”
