Canada's trade war message to the US: “We will win this war”

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly made statements on US President Donald Trump's tariff decisions, saying that they believe they will win the trade war between the two countries.

Canada's trade war message to the US: “We will win this war”

Joly stated, “We are the largest customer of the US. We make more purchases from America compared to China, Japan, Britain and France combined. Our economies are intertwined and in the end it is the Americans themselves who will help us win this war. Because they are the ones who can send the message to their lawmakers.”

Emphasizing that Canada has been struggling with rising prices and tariffs, Joly also addressed the possibility of early elections and argued that the Liberal Party should be given a clear mandate.

New US Tariffs and Canada's Retaliation

As of March 4, the US began imposing 25% additional tariffs on some products imported from Canada and Mexico. However, Trump announced that they would postpone this application until April 2 for products covered by the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Additional tariffs on US steel and aluminum imports were also secretly entered on March 12. In response, the Canadian government announced a 25% tariff on CAD 29.8 billion of imports from the US.
