According to the company’s statement, the vehicles were delivered from the Thompsons dealership in Hull and are already in active service at the Scunthorpe site.
The trucks, supplied by Renault Trucks dealer Thompsons, will form part of the external fleet responsible for long-distance transportation between suppliers and customers. Each vehicle is expected to cover approximately 1,500 miles per week.
The new trucks have been equipped with a special Power Take-Off (PTO) system, enabling them to operate bulk tipper trailers. This allows them to transport materials such as coke and mill scale from northern plants and the Immingham Bulk Terminal to the Scunthorpe site. In addition, the vehicles will be used to deliver finished steel products to customers across the country.
Each driver has received specialist training from Renault Trucks instructors to ensure maximum efficiency and safety. The trucks feature Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, and side radar systems, meeting the Direct Vision Standard (DVS) requirements necessary for deliveries within London.
Danny Atkin, British Steel’s External Fleet Transport Manager, stated:
“We are constantly looking for ways to enhance efficiency and sustainability within our operations. The turbo compound engine offers significant fuel-saving potential, and with professional driver training, we’ll be able to make the most of this technology. The Thompson Commercials team has done an excellent job, from PTO installation to ensuring DVS compliance.”
Each of the new trucks has been supplied under a five-year lease agreement. Maintenance will be carried out by Renault-approved service partner Clugston Distribution Services, located close to the Scunthorpe site.
