BOF and RH furnaces officially commissioned at Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2

Vietnam-based Hoa Phat has officially commissioned the No. 2 Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) and the RH-type vacuum refining furnace at its Dung Quat 2 Integrated Iron and Steel Complex. With these furnaces, the plant will be able to produce steel grades that meet the world’s highest quality standards.

BOF and RH furnaces officially commissioned at Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2

The BOF, designed and manufactured by Germany’s SMS Group, has a capacity of 300 tons per heat and a daily production capacity of 9,000 tons, producing molten steel with low impurity levels. The systems commissioned alongside the RH furnace are seen as a significant step in preparing for the start-up of the No. 2 Blast Furnace. The full project is expected to be completed by September 2025.

The blast furnace at Dung Quat 2 has a volume of 2,500 m³, twice that of Dung Quat 1, and consumes less energy. The plant has invested beyond current environmental standards to reduce CO₂ emissions and energy consumption.

Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 utilizes technology lines from European and G7 partners such as SMS (Germany) and Primetals (UK). In May 2025, Hoa Phat and SMS Group signed a contract to supply technology and production lines for the annual production of 700,000 tons of rail steel and construction steel.

Additionally, since mid-June, the plant has commissioned the No. 2 thick plate continuous casting machine with a daily casting capacity of 20,000 tons. Designed and supplied by Primetals, the machine aims to improve production efficiency, optimize product quality, save energy, and reduce operating costs.
