Blast Furnace No. 2 at Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 Iron and Steel Complex has produced its first iron

Blast Furnace No. 2 at the Vietnam-based Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 Iron and Steel Complex has successfully produced its first iron, marking the completion of the project's second phase. The complex is equipped with advanced production lines sourced from Europe and G7 countries.

The second blast furnace at Dung Quat 2 has also officially started operations as the sixth blast furnace of the entire complex. With a volume of 2,500 m³, this furnace produces hot metal at twice the capacity of the furnaces at Dung Quat 1 while consuming less energy. Hoa Phat has also implemented environmental investments that exceed current legal standards, particularly in reducing CO₂ emissions and improving energy efficiency.

The success of the project highlights the critical role of the equipment used. The Dung Quat 2 complex is equipped with BOF converters and RH vacuum degassing furnaces supplied by SMS from Germany, a thick-plate continuous casting machine from Primetals in the United Kingdom, and blast furnaces from Danieli Corus in the Netherlands. This system aims to minimize production costs while ensuring the highest product quality and environmental compliance.

As Southeast Asia’s largest steel producer, Hoa Phat has invested in the latest technologies based on a closed-loop, circular model. In this context, excess heat from production is recovered, and coke oven gas is used as fuel for energy generation. This system increases production efficiency, reduces costs, and optimizes product quality.

With the commissioning of Blast Furnace No. 2, the Dung Quat Complex now operates a total of six blast furnaces: four at Dung Quat 1 and two at Dung Quat 2. The total capacity of the complex has reached 12 million tons per year, 9 million tons of which consist of hot-rolled coils (HRC) and other high-quality steels.

The Dung Quat 2 project focuses on high-value HRC products for the automotive, food processing, petrochemical, and white goods sectors. Once the entire project is fully operational, Hoa Phat Group’s total steel production will reach 16 million tons annually, positioning the company among the world’s top 30 steel producers.
