Bekaert temporarily halts green hydrogen electrolyzer production in Wetteren

Belgian steel wire manufacturer Bekaert has announced its intention to temporarily suspend the production of green hydrogen electrolyzer components at its Bekintex plant in Wetteren, Belgium.

Bekaert temporarily halts green hydrogen electrolyzer production in Wetteren

The decision was made due to the slower-than-expected development of the green hydrogen market and lower short-term demand projections.

The company stated that the plan would directly affect 24 jobs and has begun holding information sessions for the affected employees. Management is evaluating the possibility of relocating workers to other Bekaert sites in Belgium and will initiate a consultation process with social partners in accordance with the Renault Law.

Bekaert plans to preserve the facilities and equipment in Wetteren to be able to resume production once the market gains momentum. Meanwhile, the company’s Hydrogen Innovation Center in Deerlijk will remain operational, continuing to develop next-generation components for green hydrogen.

About the Bekintex Plant
The Bekintex facility in Wetteren is one of Bekaert’s four production sites in Belgium, manufacturing antistatic and heat-resistant textile solutions as well as green hydrogen production components. The site currently employs around 90 people.
