Speaking at the session “Infrastructure Panel: Outlook for Steel Consumption in Mega Projects”, held during the Third Saudi International Iron & Steel Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Abdul-Rahman Al-Ghabban, Board Member of Bechtel Corporation and Board Member of the American Chamber of Commerce Saudi Arabia (AmCham Saudi Arabia), shared key insights on the future of collaboration in the construction sector and the transformative role of artificial intelligence.

Bechtel executive Al-Ghabban: “Artificial intelligence will redefine collaboration in construction”

Al-Ghabban emphasized that the construction industry has long operated under a silo model, but this approach is no longer sustainable. He stated, “Governments and the private sector must act in a more integrated manner to foster innovation and resilience.”

Referring to Bechtel’s joint ventures with Çimtaş Pipe and Unger Steel Fabrication FZE, Al-Ghabban noted that these collaborations have contributed to the standardization of designs, shorter delivery times, and significant efficiency improvements in project management.

Highlighting the growing role of artificial intelligence in the sector, Al-Ghabban outlined the key advantages of the technology as follows:

  • Automating design reviews to generate smarter alternatives,

  • Improving supplier risk management and procurement decisions,

  • Expanding supplier networks and optimizing cost structures.

Sharing his outlook for the future, Al-Ghabban stated, Artificial intelligence will make our industry faster, smarter, and more strategic through autonomous supply chain planning, dynamic pricing, and productive contracting processes.”

Concluding his speech, Al-Ghabban underscored the importance of early engagement between project owners, engineers, contractors, and steel producers, stressing that dialogue and collaboration are essential for shared success.”
