ArcelorMittal starts production of XCarb heavy plate in Spain

The steelmaker said it was the first in Europe to be able to produce such products in these dimensions. The 18-tonne heavy plate is used in large infrastructure projects such as welded section and box section for road and rail bridges.

XCarb recycled and renewable heavy plate is produced using plate supplied by ArcelorMittal Industeel in France. This is an electric arc furnace-based steelmaking plant that uses almost 100 per cent steel scrap and 100 per cent electricity from renewable sources. This combination results in a reduction in CO2 emissions of around 60 per cent compared to plate produced by conventional blast furnace steelmaking.

Denis Parein, commercial director of ArcelorMittal's European heavy plate unit, said: "We are extremely proud that we can now offer our customers heavy plate with a reduced CO2 footprint. Our teams have worked hard to bring this product to market, which we know fulfils the growing customer need for low carbon emission steel in complex civil engineering projects,"

The executive confirmed that ArcelorMittal's XCarb heavy plate will receive an Environmental Product Declaration according to the European standard EN 15804 by the end of this year.
