ArcelorMittal resumes production at its Fos-sur-Mer plant following the fire

ArcelorMittal has restarted production at its Fos-sur-Mer facility in France following a fire that affected the steel plant on 8 October. After the shutdown period, the site produced its first steel overnight from Sunday, 21 December, into Monday, 22 December.

ArcelorMittal resumes production at its Fos-sur-Mer plant following the fire

As part of the restart, the first steel slab was produced at 03:24 for a customer in Greece. The slab was reported to be 6 metres long, 1,620 mm wide and 229 mm thick.

Following the restart of Blast Furnace No. 2 in mid-December, the steel plant also resumed operations. It was announced that the slabs produced will be rolled into steel sheets with thicknesses ranging from 1.5 mm to 25 mm, depending on the product type, and subsequently coiled, with the hot rolling mill brought back into operation as part of the restart process.

After the fire, production across the site excluding the coking plant was initially reduced and later largely suspended. Frédéric Bacou, head of the affected division, stated that site teams made significant efforts to develop and implement solutions to restart production as quickly as possible.

François Sgro, Director of ArcelorMittal Méditerranée, expressed satisfaction with the return to normal operations and the resumption of deliveries to customers.

The Fos-sur-Mer facility produces steel for the automotive and industrial sectors. Serving customers across Mediterranean countries, the site offers more than 150 different steel grades and operates with approximately 2,500 employees and 1,200 contractors.
