ArcelorMittal makes first rail shipment for Oman–UAE railway project

ArcelorMittal’s Rails and Special Sections division has completed the first rail shipment for the cross-border railway line being built between Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

ArcelorMittal makes first rail shipment for Oman–UAE railway project

The shipment was described as a major milestone in the development of the region’s first cross-border railway connection, which will link Sohar with the United Arab Emirates.

The first batch of rails, produced at ArcelorMittal’s Gijón facilities, arrived at the Port of Sohar in August 2025. The shipment consisted of 3,800 rails of the 60E2 R260 grade, each measuring 25 meters in length, with a total weight of 5,700 tonnes. Further deliveries are scheduled throughout 2026, with total shipments under the project expected to reach 33,100 tonnes.

Designed to withstand axle loads of up to 32.4 tonnes, the rails were specially engineered to suit the region’s operating and environmental conditions and to accommodate both heavy freight and passenger traffic. Once completed, the 238-kilometer line will connect Sohar to the UAE’s national rail network, strengthening trade flows, improving logistics efficiency, and supporting interaction between the two countries’ industrial and urban centers.

The project is being developed by Hafeet Rail, a joint venture between Oman’s Asyad Group and the UAE’s Etihad Rail, with financing provided by Mubadala Investment Company. Following completion, operations of the line will also be managed by Hafeet Rail.
