Products manufactured by AM/NS India serve as key inputs for strategic sectors such as automotive, infrastructure, defense, construction equipment, and durable consumer goods. With the certification, these products officially gain government-approved green steel status while helping customers reduce Scope 3 emissions across their supply chains.
To qualify for green steel certification, production emission intensity must be below 2.2 tons of CO₂ equivalent per ton of steel (tCO₂e/tfs). Production below this threshold is rated using a three-tier system, awarding three, four, or five stars. AM/NS India’s products earned high ratings under this evaluation system.
As part of the certification process, the company underwent a comprehensive audit by the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST). The audit confirmed that AM/NS India’s flagship flat steel portfolio meets the green steel criteria.
Commenting on the development, AM/NS India CEO Dilip Oommen emphasized that India’s Green Steel Classification provides an important roadmap for the future of the sector. Oommen stated that the company focuses on low-carbon production processes and clean energy investments, adding that the certification reflects its progress on the sustainability journey.
The company’s low-carbon production infrastructure played a key role in obtaining the certification. Approximately 65% of AM/NS India’s total production capacity relies on natural gas-based direct reduced iron (DRI) technology, which results in significantly lower carbon emissions compared to traditional coal-based methods. Since 2015, the company has reduced its carbon emission intensity by over 35%.
AM/NS India’s emission performance is also supported by renewable energy investments. Energy from a nearly 1 GW hybrid renewable project developed by AM Green Energy in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, began supplying the Hazira plant in Gujarat in 2025. This project significantly reduces the company’s dependence on fossil fuels.
ArcelorMittal announced plans in December 2025 to invest approximately USD 0.9 billion in three new renewable energy projects across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Once completed, the company’s total renewable energy capacity in India is expected to reach 2 GW, doubling the current capacity.
Additionally, AM/NS India is developing a 550 MW hybrid renewable project in Bhachau, Gujarat, comprising 300 MW of solar and 250 MW of wind. The project is expected to save approximately 0.9 million tons of CO₂ emissions annually.
Following the green steel certification, the company began commercial production of four-star HRC and three-star CRC products. This provides reliable, sustainable, and government-approved green steel alternatives to the domestic market while enhancing India’s competitiveness in the global steel sector.
In the 2025 fiscal year, AM/NS India achieved CO₂ emission intensity 14% lower than the national average. The company targets a 20% reduction in emission intensity by 2030 compared to the 2021 base year.
