Algoma Steel closes two lines as part of transition to electric arc furnace

Canadian steel producer Algoma Steel has made an important decision in its transition to electric arc furnace production, deciding to close two lines in its plate and strip complex indefinitely.

The 106-inch rolling line and the No. 1 tempering line will be discontinued, Laura Devoni, the company's Director of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs, told SooToday.

“At Algoma Steel, we have to adapt to the ever-changing steel market. Our recently modernized plate mill is central to our strategy. In this context, we are focusing our operations and commercial efforts on the production and sale of sheet.”

Information Provided to Employees

Devoni stated that following this decision, the affected employees were informed within the scope of collective agreements. However, details on employee movements were not shared.

Mike Da Prat, president of Steelworkers Local 2251, which represents Algoma Steel workers, said there was no clear date for the closures. “I can't give an exact date right now because the situation can change. But Line 1 and Line 106 will be stopped,” he said.

106-Inch Mill Line to be consigned to history

Algoma Steel's 106-inch hot strip rolling mill is capable of rolling low carbon steel plates up to 96 inches wide. The line was introduced in the 1960s as one of the largest mills in North America and a source of pride for the company.

The company's transition to an electric arc furnace is considered a strategic transformation aimed at reducing carbon emissions and focusing on modern production processes. This move is expected to make Algoma Steel's operations more efficient and increase its competitiveness in the market.
