On the second day of the 3rd International Iron and Steel Conference held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, SteelRadar’s International Market Intelligence Specialist Shukufa Sayadli and Russula’s Business Development Director Alberto Voltolina successfully chaired a special session titled “Embracing Digital Transformation to Optimize Efficiency and Water Treatment in Steel Production.”
The session focused on the strategic role of digital transformation in enhancing long-term competitiveness in steel production and the contribution of optimized water treatment systems to sustainability goals.
In his presentation, also titled “Embracing Digital Transformation to Optimize Efficiency and Water Treatment in Steel Production,” Alberto Voltolina highlighted Russula’s leadership in the industry, backed by over 35 years of experience and projects delivered to more than 100 steel plants worldwide.
Voltolina emphasized that Russula’s water treatment solutions develop systems integrating the latest environmental protection technologies for the steel and aluminum sectors, aiming to achieve zero-waste and zero-liquid-discharge production facilities.
“As Russula, we place environmental sustainability at the heart of our production processes. Our water treatment plants not only conserve resources but also improve energy efficiency,” Voltolina stated, explaining the company’s 360° approach in this field.
He also discussed Russula’s digitalization and artificial intelligence solutions, noting that these technologies elevate production through data collection and analysis during the rolling process, enabling data-driven decisions and predictive maintenance.
“Our AI-supported systems optimize production processes, reduce errors, and increase efficiency. Digitalization is no longer optional; it is fundamental to competitiveness,” he added.
One of the highlighted examples in the presentation was the HYDNUM Steel project. Voltolina explained that this project represents the future of sustainable production as a circular, zero-emission facility producing 2.7 million tons/year of clean flat steel powered entirely by renewable energy.
As part of Russula’s 360° water solutions, Voltolina noted that engineering, procurement, manufacturing, assembly, commissioning, operation, and maintenance are all provided as an integrated service, establishing a sustainable model for industrial water treatment, recovery, and reuse.
He concluded his remarks with:
“The steel industry must establish a new balance between digitalization, environmental protection, and resource efficiency. At Russula, we are working to make this transformation possible through technology. Digital transformation is not only the production model of today but also of the future.”
