AISI welcomes trade agreement negotiations with Indonesia

Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), welcomed the White House's announcement of a negotiating framework for a Reciprocal Trade Agreement with Indonesia.

AISI welcomes trade agreement negotiations with Indonesia

In particular, Dempsey noted the importance of Indonesia's commitment to lift restrictions on exports of industrial commodities, including critical minerals, to the US. AISI welcomed this step to lift export restrictions on critical minerals such as nickel, which is vital for stainless steel production.

The statement emphasized that Indonesia's current nickel export ban and other trade restrictions have caused serious imbalances in the global nickel market to the detriment of US steel producers, in line with close ties with Chinese steelmakers linked to China's Belt and Road Initiative investments in the country.

AISI aims to play an active role in addressing Indonesia's nickel export restrictions and other trade-distorting policies by working with the US Trade Representative (USTR) in the later stages of these negotiations.
