Acciaierie d'Italia Taranto has decided to close Blast Furnace No.1

Italian steel mill Acciaierie d'Italia (ADI) Taranto will close blast furnace No. 1 by September 2023 to install a gas cleaning system at its sinter plant.

Acciaierie d'Italia Taranto has decided to close Blast Furnace No.1

The fourth system for the company, the Meros waterless gas cleaning system, will be supplied by equipment manufacturer Primetals Technologies.

During the work, the capacity of the sinter plant will be significantly reduced. It will not be sufficient to service the three blast furnaces currently operating at the steel plant. One of them will therefore be shut down. Blast furnaces No. 2 and No. 4 will continue to melt pig iron.

Furnace 2 was idle for almost a year from June 2022 to May 2023. It was brought back into service on the initiative of ADI's controlling shareholder ArcelorMittal, which needed additional supplies of semi-finished products. In the second half of 2023, ArcelorMittal will also refurbish blast furnace No. 5 and start installing an electric arc furnace.
