A Turkish mining company signed an agreement with the Taliban

The Turkish company Emmioğlu Madencilik signed a $6.2 million contract with the Taliban administration to acquire the operating rights of a marble field in the Kandahar region of Afghanistan.

A Turkish mining company signed an agreement with the Taliban

At a ceremony organized by the Taliban's Ministry of Mines and Petroleum in Kabul, the Taliban's Ministry of Mines and Petroleum awarded Emmioğlu Madencilik the right to operate a three square kilometer marble field in Dara-i Nur district. Hedayatullah Badri, the Taliban's Minister of Mines and Petroleum, said that under the 30-year contract, the Turkish company will be able to invest in exploration, extraction and processing in the region. Musa Emmioğlu, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Emmioğlu Company, also attended the signing ceremony.

Turkish Companies Stand Out in Mining in Afghanistan

This deal is one of the first major projects involving Turkish companies in the mining sector in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Earlier, another Turkish company, 77 İnşaat, signed a USD 163 million contract with the Taliban for the Yetimtaq Cement Factory in Jawziyan.

The Taliban administration argues that mining investments will strengthen Afghanistan's economy and provide funding for the country's infrastructure projects. Howeverthe opposition accuses the Taliban of not being transparent enough about how mining revenues are being used and are calling for more clarification on this issue.

While the interest of Turkish companies' interest in mining projects in Afghanistan is expected to increase in the upcoming period, it remains to be seen how these deals will reflect on the country's economic structure.
