Slag continued to be used in construction materials, fertilizer production and other industrial applications, achieving a high recovery rate.
According to EUROSLAG data, all of the 21.5 million tons of blast furnace slag produced during the year was utilized. Of this amount, 20 million tons was used as granulated blast furnace slag for cement production, while 1.5 million tons was used as aggregate in concrete and road construction.
Out of the total 16.5 million tons of steel slag, 13.5 million tons, or %82, was recovered across various fields. This included 9 million tons used in road construction, 2 million tons in building construction, 0.8 million tons in fertilizer production, 1.6 million tons in metallurgical applications and 0.1 million tons in other uses.
Through the reuse of slag in these areas, Europe was able to avoid the extraction of 40 million tons of natural rock and prevent 11.4 million tons of CO₂ emissions. Looking at the 2000–2024 period as a whole, a total of 1.21 billion tons of natural rock extraction and 319 million tons of CO₂ emissions were prevented.
