$150 million carbon capture initiative launched at U.S. Steel’s Indiana facility

CarbonFree, based in San Antonio, Texas, has announced a new $150 million project at U.S. Steel’s Gary Works in Gary, Indiana, set to be completed by 2026. The project plans to capture 50,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year from the plant, which emits about 10 million metric tons of CO2 annually.

The goal is to transform this captured CO2 into precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), a valuable product used in various industries, including construction and pharmaceuticals.

Using its proprietary SkyCycle technology, CarbonFree will convert CO2 emissions and calcium from steelmaking byproducts into PCC. This approach is a shift from traditional carbon capture methods that rely heavily on government subsidies and focus mainly on storing CO2 underground.

The Gary Works project illustrates a new way of managing carbon emissions by not only containing them but also turning them into profitable products. This method could potentially reshape industrial practices and policies, emphasizing economic viability alongside environmental sustainability.

While this project represents a small fraction of the plant’s total emissions, its success could serve as a model for other industries, demonstrating how sustainability can be economically viable and integrated into industrial operations.
