Security level raised to highest for Turkish-flagged ships in the Strait of Hormuz

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the security level has been raised to Level 3 for Turkish-flagged ships that will call at Iranian ports and pass through the Strait of Hormuz, in response to increased security risks in the region following Israel's attacks on Iran.

Security level raised to highest for Turkish-flagged ships in the Strait of Hormuz

Minister Uraloğlu stated, “In order for Turkish-flagged ships that will call at Iranian ports and sail through the Strait of Hormuz to be prepared against security threats, we have raised the security level to the highest level within the scope of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS).”

Measures to be implemented on ships under Security Level 3 include: temporary suspension of loading and unloading operations, stricter control of delivered materials, restriction of entry and exit to the ship, and allowing access only to authorized persons.

In addition, the ship's captain will be able to increase security measures regarding restricted areas on the ship, define new restricted areas, and, if necessary, restrict access to the entire ship.

Minister Uraloğlu stated that the measures taken include electronic and physical security precautions, emphasizing that the ship's surroundings should be illuminated, surveillance equipment should be kept operational, and recording durations should be extended.

As security risks regarding maritime traffic have once again come to the agenda following Israel's attacks in the Strait of Hormuz—through which approximately 20% of the world's oil trade passes and which is under Iran's control—Turkey's step has drawn attention.
