The unfair competition problem caused by rising import pressure and price-undercutting practices in the stainless steel sector one of the key inputs of Turkish industry has once again strengthened the call for higher anti-dumping measures. Industry representatives underline that the influx of low-priced products from the Far East and Asia is disrupting market balance and rendering domestic producers unable to operate. New statements have now come from Posco Assan, Türkiye’s largest stainless steel producer.Kibar Holding CEO Haluk Kayabaşı emphasized that the global shift toward renewed protection policies is also necessary for Türkiye, noting that the solution to preventing the sector from facing the threat of collapse and to reducing the pressure lies in maintaining a fairer competitive environment.
HALUK KAYABAŞI: FAIR COMPETITION IN THE SECTOR IS POSSIBLE WITH STRATEGIC PROTECTION
Haluk Kayabaşı, who aims to introduce more proactive and lasting solutions against dumped imports, said: “Stainless steel holds an essential place among the indispensable inputs of modern industry. Implementing protective measures has become inevitable. Ensuring fair competition in the sector is only possible by maintaining a defense mechanism that supports domestic producers.”
Recalling that prices originating from Asia and the Far East have disrupted the competitive environment in the domestic market and weakened local investment, Kayabaşı said:
“Particularly for competition distorted by the low prices coming from China and the recent surge in low-priced imports, we have submitted an application to our Ministry of Trade. Türkiye’s consumption of cold-rolled stainless steel is around 400–450 thousand tons. However, we hold a share of about 80% in this consumption. Local production at lower cost boosts employment, revitalizes investment appetite, and strengthens Türkiye’s competitive power,” he noted, emphasizing that both domestic and foreign investors stand to benefit.
JI SEOB CHOI: "IF THE COMPETITION IS FAIR, TURKEY WILL WIN"
Ji Seob Choi, CEO of Posco Assan one of the strongest players in stainless steel emphasized that the fight against imported products should be a collective effort by all local industry stakeholders. Addressing sector representatives, he stated that:“As Türkiye’s only domestic producer, we are struggling against dumped products. Most of the time, we face incoming goods from China and other countries at prices that make it difficult to stay afloat. In the U.S., protective measures can reach up to 50%. If similar measures are adopted in Türkiye, we can expand our production, make further investments, and create more employment.”
TÜRKİYE'S FIRST-EVER ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRODUCTION PROCESS
Posco Assan, which prioritizes solution-oriented technologies such as energy efficiency, carbon footprint reduction, and modern filtration systems across all its production processes, operates in compliance with national and international environmental standards.
