The Philippines Ministry of Commerce and Industry has decided not to impose protective duties on rolled products with galvanized steel, aluzinc and polymer coatings. In July 2020, a petition was filed by Puyat Steel and Sonic Steel Industries to restrict the import of these products.
The department said that the investigation into coated rolled product imports was dropped because Puyat Steel, which accounts for more than 80% of its production in the Philippines, could not meet all the needs of the domestic market. As a result, the introduction of protective taxes will lead to higher prices.
As for Sonic Steel, it withdrew its petition when the Ministry of Commerce and Industry banned the production and import of metal and polymer coated sheets thinner than 0.4 mm. Earlier, the company had complained that the national market was overflowing with fine products.
The Philippines' own galvanized steel production capacities are estimated at 750 thousand tons per year, and polymer-coated rolled products - 240 thousand tons per year. Most of the imported products come to the country from China and Vietnam.
